It all started in a small town in Wisconsin, when I got my first digital camera - a Minolta Dimage Z2 with a whopping 3.2 megapixel sensor. Many hours were spent testing out the capabilities and learning how to take photos every where I went.
In high school, specifically my senior year, I spent 3 hours straight doing photography with a combination of a study hall, lunch hour, and directed study. There I experimented with 4x5 cameras, color processing, large format printing, and anything else I could get my hands on.
Making the decision to go to NMU (Northern Michigan University) I originally chose a degree of Environmental Design; yet my obsession with photography continued. After reading a book called ‘Happier’ by Dr. Ben Tal-Shahar it became clear to me that I was destined to live a life with a camera in my hand. I switched my major over to photography and graduated in 2009 with my BFA.
Since then it’s been a whirlwind!
Post graduation I took a huge trip that focused on a goal of driving the California coast. Coming back to reality I spent a short amount of time in Minneapolis, MN before getting a job as a full time photo assistant for a commercial photographer in Brainerd, MN. After a year of assisting I moved to Fargo, ND where I quickly got a full time job for one of the largest hospitals in the region - Sanford Health. It was there that I developed video skills to add to my bag of tricks, as well as a large healthcare portfolio and experience. In that time I married my beautiful wife Katie, and we decided together that Marquette was the place for us. We moved there without any job prospects but with faith that something would open up - and it sure did. NMU was going through a rebrand at that time and I got hired on to be the principal photographer for the “Fearless” campaign where I worked along side a video production crew. It wasn’t long after that and talks of a full time position began…
It seems fitting that I spent 4 years at NMU getting a BFA, and then another 4 years developing my photo/video and production education.
Running my own production company was a side hustle to make ends meet, but the demand for work increased by the year until it was time to commit to LeClair Photo+Video full time as of February 2019.
And here we are with cameras and lights and computers, ready to serve you.
